Oh snap! Is it true? Cool Tapes is back? Showl is… I know I’ve been gone for more than a minute, but I’m back. While I was on hiatus taking care of my offline life I listened to a gang of new music put out this year, and let me tell you 2010 has been pretty dope so far. And since it’s spring time, and I haven’t really blessed you with any goodness in a while, I decided to make a lil mix for ya’ll to play in your Jeeps (does anybody still have a jeep?). There’s no REAL theme to this mix, but if you’ve heard any of the other ones than you probably know what to expect: I like nice grooves and beats, and there are plenty of those. So if it’s starting to heat up outside throw this on your iPod, your iPhone, a cd, or whatever pleases you the most, and kick back with a nice bev or take a ride around town. It doesn’t matter to me. Just share and pass it around.

There are two reasons why people love ESOTSM so much- the first being a mix of the story and Michel Gondry’s visual ninja skills, and the second being Jon Brion’s amazing score. It seems like there’s something about the above track, Phone Call, that led Jay Electronica and Memoryhouse to use it almost as is for their own songs. WOW. So I know 2009 has been over for a few days now, but I forgot to post part 2 of the mix (kanye shrug). If you still care about anything that was 2009 you might want to give this a listen. This is a little different from part 1- it’s on mixed mp3, and it’s got this moodiness to it. Not really sure what I was going for on this one. I just wanted to make a mix with “Shine Blockas” on it. Cool Tapes '09 Edition

I know things have been pretty slow on the site since I started it, but the original idea of a different guest mix per week was a little too ambitious to start. So I have decided to tone it down a little and let things happen how they happen. But you can be bet that there will be more guest mixes coming in the new decade, so keep an eye out!

With that said I would like to present you with the Cool Tapes version of an end of the year mix. It took me a while to get this mix the way I wanted it because there was alot of good music that came out this year and I didn’t want to leave anything out. I knew that I didn’t want to go the P4k rout and make a mix that included all of the “big” albums from this year (griz, girls, anco, p pit, phoenix…), but I also didn’t want to seem like I was trying to bite anyone’s style (gvb, aquarium d, underwater peeps…). So I just decided to not think about it and put together something that sounded like ME. And if you know me, or have been fortunate enough to pass music back and forth with me, then you will know that this is a mix that I would make, like, “That’s SOOO J.J.” So I hope you enjoy. Feel free to pass it on, and stay tuned for Part 2.

This weeks mix comes from Parisian photographer Keffer; you have might recognize his photos from Kanye’s blog. If you have seen is work you know that his Jour De Nuit (The Night Day) series is an examination of what happens when the sun goes down, and the volume comes up in the streets of Paris. Beautiful people and sweaty bodies make Keffer’s work both provocative and inviting. And for those of us that have never had the privilege of experiencing the city’s night life, Keffer’s mix is surly an auditory tour of the scene. With a mix of Parisian Hip Hop, dance music, and a couple of sprinkles of some Jackson’s, this mix is definitely one to play the next time you want to take a little mental vacation- just close your eyes and press play. Paris is waiting for you.

I’m excited to be able to present the first mix here on Cool Tapes, and I’m even more excited that Julian was so enthusiastic about being a part of the series. I hadn’t heard of Julian before this year, but once I heard Garden 2 I was won over. When you listen to his music you get a real sense of how deep his love is for music, and this mix is no different. If you have been listening to any of Julian’s work lately you will be able to quickly recognize the different influences from these songs on his music, and ideally that is what this site is all about- allowing you to see how music affects creativity, and I’m glad we got it right on the first try. Check out what Julian has to say about the mix:

Initially I wanted this mix to have some sort of theme. So, in its original incarnation, all the songs had lyrics focusing on the expression of love, in one form or another. I abandoned that idea, though many of those songs remain. Truly, the only thread that holds these selections together is that they have been, at some point recently (in the last year or two), very enjoyable and meaningful to me on some level. Without a doubt, all of the artists represented here have had a profound effect on the music I choose to make, although not always in the same way. I’d prefer not to talk extensively about each individual track, or the mix in general. Rather, I will submit it with the hope that some of you might enjoy this music too!
